The best roofing material for your building is one that is suitable for your environment, building and budget. Each of the options listed below has benefits that may make them more suitable for certain types of commercial buildings. If you don’t find an option that jumps out at you, get in touch, and we’ll be happy to offer our advice on what might work best for your building.

Long-run roofing

Long-run roofing is a popular choice thanks to its long life and cost-effectiveness. Installed in long, continuous lengths, it has fewer seams than short-run roofing which means reduced potential for leaks. It’s also lightweight, which makes it fairly easy to install without adding unnecessary weight to older buildings.

Long-run roofing sheets from trusted brands like Colorsteel or Zincalume are also tough enough to withstand the varied Christchurch climate, from harsh UV rays in summer to cold, wet winters. Maintenance is straightforward and cost-effective, involving the removal of lichen and debris and checking for damage from overhanging trees or general wear and tear over time.

Whether you are looking to update an ageing warehouse or construct a new facility, long-run roofing is a great solution.

Membrane roofing

Membrane roofing is another excellent option for commercial buildings, particularly for flat or mono-pitch roofs. Flexible membranes from materials like butyl, TPO (Thermoplastic Polyolefin), or torch-on substances, are quick to install and can be easily fitted around protrusions or roof-mounted equipment.

The membranes are either fully adhered, mechanically fastened, or ballasted to create a tight, impermeable layer over the roof, reducing the risk of leaks. The materials used in membrane roofing are also UV-resistant, which is a must for withstanding New Zealand’s sunny months.

Membrane roofing is well worth considering for commercial property owners who want long-lasting, weather-resistant protection on flat surfaces.

Insulated membrane roofing can also be installed over existing long-run roofing.  This is a cost effective method of adding insulation to the roof and also reduces the disruption of re-roofing all the existing roof, as this does not need to be removed.

When selecting material for your roof there are 4 main factors that we recommend considering.
1- Pitch of the roof
2- Use or purpose of the building (including future plans)
3- Future maintenance requirements
4- Quantity of roof-mounted plant

Warm roofing

Warm roofing involves integrating insulation into the roofing system itself instead of just between the ceiling and the roof. Insulated panels from brands like Conqueror or Kingspan are installed which create a cohesive roofing system.

Warm roofing is particularly suitable for buildings where keeping internal temperatures consistent is challenging. A thermally efficient option, it helps your building maintain a consistent temperature and reduces the need for excessive heating or cooling.
